Programmation des concerts officiels
de la 62ème édition du FESTIVAL DE CANNES

Le FESTIVAL DE CANNES présente la musique au cinéma à travers 11 concerts de musiques de films qui auront lieu du 13 au 23 mai 2009 en prélude aux projections du Cinéma de la Plage.
Tous les concerts sont des créations exceptionnelles pour le Festival.

KARSTEN FUNDAL - FLEMMING NORDKROG - JORGEN LAURITSEN

Lors de ce concert solo, Karsten Fundal (lauréat de la meilleure musique de film pour The art of crying à l’académie danoise en 2007) jouera ses propres compositions de bandes originales, notamment celle du film norvégien “Jernanger” de Pal Jackman, son dernier travail en date. La musique du film se mêlera à un flot de compositions improvisées, durant lesquelles d’autres musiques de film pourraient faire leur apparition, et de nouvelles choses pourraient survenir et prendre leur envol. Dans un sens, il s’agira d’un coup d’oeil au côté intime de sa musique, ce qu’il avance lorsqu’il compose.
Flemming Nordkrog et Jorgen Lauritsen font partie des quelques compositeurs de musique de film danois qui travaillent aussi en dehors de la Scandinavie. Lors de ce concert, Flemming Nordkrog présentera principalement la musique du film français “Rien de personnel”, réalisé par Mathias Gokalp (Karé Production). Ce film a été choisi pour ouvrir la semaine de la critique au Festival de Cannes 2009. Jorgen Lauritsen jouera essentiellement la musique du prochain film américain indépendant “Resolute” (LA based Fata Falena Filmproductions). Les deux compositeurs joueront avec le quatuor à cordes français “Prima Vista” et la clarinettiste Nathalie Rabette.

In this solo session Karsten Fundal (winner of the Danish Academy Award før best filmscore 2007 for The art of crying) will play his own filmscore music, especially from the Norwegian film “Jernanger” by Pål Jackman, which is my latest film. The Score music will be mingled into a flow of improvised composition, where other themes from other films might appear, or might not, and new things may arise, and take their own life. So in a way it will be a bit like a glance into his inner bank of music, which is what he draws on, when composing.

Flemming Nordkrog & Jørgen Lauritsen are among the few Danish film composers to work outside of Scandinavia.
Flemming Nordkrog presents at this concert mainly the music for the French feature film “Rien de personnel”, directed by Mathias Gokalp (Karé Production). The film is chosen to open La semaine de la critique at this years Cannes festival. Jørgen Lauritsen will primarily perform music from the upcoming Independent American feature film “Resolute” (LA based Fata Falena Filmproductions). The two composer will perform with French string quartet “Prima Vista” and clarinetist Nathalie Rabette.

Le festival de Cannes 2009 met la lumière sur les compositeurs Jacob Groth et Karsten Fundal. Les deux artistes ont écrit respectivement la musique des films “The girl with the dragon tattoo” et “Flame and Citron”. En coopération avec la symphonie Athelas de Copenhague, Groth et Fundal ont développé le projet “musique du film Millenium 2009” pour le festival de Cannes. Avec les musiques des deux films, les compositeurs ont conquis un large public au Danemark et à l’étranger, et il y a de fortes chances pour que les films comme leurs musiques deviennent les meilleurs succès nordiques des derniers temps. Le concert à Cannes aura lieu sur la magnifique scène en
plein air du Cinéma de la plage, qui peut accueillir plusieurs centaines de personnes.

La musique joue un rôle très important dans les deux films, elle représente un élément majeur et co-narratif dans “Flame and Citron” et “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”. Jacob Groth et Karsten Fundal s’expriment au sujet du nouveau concert de musique de film sans film:

“La musique d’un film est un élément de narration qui ne peut être exprimé par d’autres aspects du film. La musique exprime le sous entendu émotionnel du film. La musique est l’aspect du film qui est capable de créer la connexion d’identité émotionnelle entre le public, les personnages du film et l’histoire. La musique est normalement la porte qui mène à la couche émotionnelle des personnages. Lors de notre concert, nous prenons l’autre direction: nous voyageons à partir du son qui contient le contenu dramatique du film, vers la création d’images effectuée par le spectateur. Ces images ressembleront peut être à celles du film dont la musique est tirée, ou bien des associations, de nouvelles images, complètement différentes surgiront de la conscience de l’auditeur.

Cannes Film Festival 2009 brings composers Jacob Groth and Karsten Fundal into focus. The two composers have written the music for the films “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” and “Flame and Citron” respectively. Together with Athelas Sinfonietta Copenhagen, Groth and Fundal have developed the project “Millennium Soundtrack 2009” for Cannes Film Festival. Along with the music for the two films the composers have gained a large audience in Denmark and abroad, and both films and music have the potential to become the greatest Nordic successes in recent history. The concert in Cannes takes place on the beautiful open-air stage Cinema de la Plage, which seats an audience of thousands.

Music plays a very important part in both films. They both contain an enormous amount of music, and music is a leading and co-narrating element in both “Flame and Citron” and “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”. Jacob Groth and Karsten Fundal state about the new concert of film music without film:

“Music in films is the layer of the narration that cannot be expressed through film’s other agents. The emotional undercurrent in film is music’s narrative platform. Music is the layer in a film which is capable of creating the emotional coupling of identity between audience, the characters of the film and the story. The music is usually the door into the characters’ and the narrative’s emotional stratum. In our concert we move in the opposite direction: we travel from musical sound, with a built-in dramatic content from the film, towards the creation of images inside the listener. Perhaps these images will bear a resemblance to the films that the music originates from, or perhaps new and utterly different images and associations will arise in the consciousness of the listener”

Les membres du groupe Det Ar Jag Som Ar Doden ont transformé la musique lancinante du documentaire “Don’t fuck with the Lewises” en un morceau original de musique pop. C’est étonnamment dansant et enjoué, bien que les paroles ont tendance à commenter la décadence moderne. Le nom du groupe est une citation du film d’Ingmar Bergman “The seventh seal”.”

Det är jag som är döden transformed their haunting film music to the documentary “Don’t Fuck with the Lewises”, into an original piece of popmusic. It’s surprisingly danceable and upbeat, though their lyrics tend to comment modern decay. Their name is a quote from the Ingmar Bergman movie “The seventh seal”.

John Erik Kaada

John Erik Kaada a composé la bande originale du film “O’Horten” de Bent Hamer. Compositeur et musicien norvégien, il s’est spécialisé depuis 2001 dans la composition des musiques de films. Il fait également partie du groupe Cloroform et a travaillé avec le chanteur américain Mike Patton. Lors du concert du Cinéma de la Plage, John Erik Kaada et ses musiciens rendront hommage aux musiques de films norvégiennes.

John Erik Kaada composed for Bent Hamer, the soundtrack of O’Horten.
Norwegian musician and composer, he has worked since 2001 to the composition of soundtracks. He also plays in the group Cloroform and worked with the American singer Mike Patton. For the concert of the Cinéma de la Plage, John Erik Kaada and his musicians pay tribute to Norwegian soundtracks.

Jean-Michel Bernard

Jean-Michel Bernard nous ouvrira les portes de son parcours artistique auprès de Ray Charles avec son album “Message to Ray” - qu’il abordera seul au piano - puis nous offrira ses plus belles compositions de musiques de films, partant de l’univers onirique de Michel Gondry à un hommage personnel à Maurice Jarre, en visitant au passage ses collaborations avec Lalo Schiffrin et Ennio Morricone qui lui ont valu de nombreuses récompenses internationales (Sundance, Cannes, UCMF, SACEM). La personnalité et l’originalité de Jean-Michel Bernard feront merveille à Cannes, sous les étoiles.

Bardi Johannsson (Bang Gang)

This Icelandic filmmaker and composer Bardi Johannsson is the winner of the 2008 Icelandic Film and TV awards for the best original film score ! In the past five years, he co-directed a short film (Red Death, screened at the Pompidou Centre in 2004), produced and wrote lyrics for several Icelandic artists, and composed a soundtracks (Haxan, 2005). For the Cannes Film Festival, Bardi Johannsson will play with his band Bang Gang.

Le réalisateur et compositeur Bardi Johannsson a été primé en 2008 pour la meilleure musique de film (Film & Tv awards / Islande). Ces cinq dernières années, Bardi a co-réalisé un court métrage (Red Death, diffusé au centre Pompidou en 2004), produit et écrit des chansons pour plusieurs artistes islandais, et composé la musique du film “Haxan” en 2005. Pour le festival de Cannes, Bardi Johannsson jouera avec son groupe Bang Gang.

Belle Roscoe
Hommage folk de l’Australie aux musiques de films / Australian folk tribute to music soundtracks

Ce groupe Australien est composé des soeurs jumelles Julia et Sarah Gurry et de leur frère Matt. La musique de Belle Roscoe puise ses racines dans la pop des années 70 de Fleetwood Mac et la folk acoustique de Neil Young. Au Cinéma de la Plage, Belle Roscoe vous montrera comment les compositeurs de musiques de films du monde entier ont influencé leur style. Belle Roscoe rendra hommage à certaines de leurs BO préférées et interprétera quelques uns de leurs titres originaux présents dans des films internationaux.

This Australian band is made up of twin sisters Julia and Sarah Gurry and their brother Matt. The roots of Belle Roscoe music is in the classic ‘70s pop of Fleetwood Mac and the acoustic folk of Neil Young. Au Cinema de la Plage, Belle Roscoe will demonstrate how international film composers have influenced their style of music. Belle Roscoe will pay tribute to some of their favourite soundtrack songs and also perform a few of their original tracks which have already featured in Australian films & worldwide.
